January 2015 Color of the Month: WENDIGO

WENDIGO – JANUARY 2015 COLOR OF THE MONTH – The 5th of twelve shades in the “Mythical Monsters” year theme!

The Wendigo is a demonic spirit believed by Algonquin Native American tribes to possess humans and turn them into cannibals. The creature is human-like, but very tall and gaunt, often depicted with stag horns, and with deeply sunken eyes and yellowish, decaying skin. They are impossibly thin and have an unending hunger that craves only human flesh.

The Wendigo legend was prevalent in the northern United States and Canada, and particularly roamed around woods and forests in the coldest areas where food was scarce and survival was challenging. Some legends say that the Wendigo was made of ice, or had a heart made of ice. Either way, the Wendigo is always associated with winter, ice, cold, hunger and famine (thus a fitting choice for January’s COTM!). (source: http://www.gods-and-monsters.com/wendigo-legend.html)

In popular culture, the Wendigo can be found in comic books, movies, and popular shows such as Hannibal, Supernatural and Charmed.
